Keywords at the exhibition “Il caso Grassi” opened in April 2013 during the Salone del Mobile and ending next June 2013. It takes place through the halls of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, in Villa Reale, in which the prestigious Grassi collection inspires admiration. This context represents an ideal setting for our beautiful monocle, Zoom Art, awarded by the Honourable Mention at Compasso d’Oro ADI.
Thanks to the fine quality lenses, Zoom Art is designed to aid in observation of hidden details, revealing the most authentic beauties along the streets and on the buildings, in the paintings and frescoes in the museums and art sites, enabling a new experience of Art.
The monocle hangs on the window of each hall where the exhibition takes place so that the visitor may use it to focus the details of architecture and of the beautiful garden surrounding the Villa.

Queste le parole chiave dell’allestimento “ Il Caso Grassi” inaugurato in Aprile 2013 durante il Salone del Mobile di Milano; l’allestimento rimarrà visitabile fino al prossimo Giugno 2013.
Si tratta di un percorso di osservazione e di conoscenza che si snoda attraverso le sale della Galleria di Arte Moderna di Milano (GAM) - a Villa Reale - che ospitano in modo permanente la prestigiosa Collezione Grassi.
Il nostro monocolo ZoomArt ha trovato un suo ideale collocamento in questo percorso espositivo che, a partire dalla salita lungo la scala progettata dall’architetto Ignazio Gardella, invita a guardare, scoprire, pensare.
La filosofia alla base di questo piccolo oggetto design, premiato con la Menzione d’Onore ADI Compasso d’Oro, è infatti proprio quella di permettere a chi lo utilizza di fare un’esperienza nuova che non sarebbe possibile senza di lui. La visione amplificata, offerta dallo strumento, permette di avere uno sguardo più approfondito: si vede di più, si scoprono dettagli che non si immaginavano, si rallenta il passo dedicando un po’di tempo a guardare quello che i nostri occhi normalmente non vedono. L’allestimento ha previsto che ad ogni finestra principale delle sale che ospitano la Collezione Grassi sia appeso uno ZoomArt, corredato da informazioni sull’uso e breve spiegazione del concept; il visitatore lo può utilizzare e puntare fuori dalla finestra per emozionarsi ricercando e scoprendo dettagli nascosti e particolari architettonici, paesaggistici, estetici del magnifico giardino storico all’inglese che circonda Villa Reale.

Here is the interview to Cristina Cencetti, Communication & Press Office Manager of Palomar, regarding the Crumpled City™ Junior Maps project, edited on the March 2013 issue of the Giornale della Libreria- the monthly magazine of the Associazione Italiana Editori, dedicated to Junior Publishingand distributed in the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

Palomar è un’azienda di design che trae il suo nome dall’omonimo personaggio di talo Calvino, caratterizzato da una genuina curiosità verso il mondo. I nostri prodotti si ispirano proprio a questo concetto di interesse per la realtà che ci circonda quindi l’idea delle mappe Crumpled City è venuta naturale. ln inglese «crumpled» significa letteralmente «stropicciabile» ed in effetti le cartine di Palomar sono prodotte in un materiale tecnico molto speciale, «Sono leggerissime. Resistenti alI’acqua e si prestano ad un uso molto disinvolto, liberatorio e quasi irriverente perché, assolta la loro funzione, invece di ripiegarle accuratamente, si possono mettere in tasca semplicemente appallottolandole.

Le Crumpled City nascono nel 2011. Inizialmente pensate per adulti. sull’onda del successo abbiamo deciso di declinarle anche per bambini e così sono nate le mappe Junior. Quando vanno in vacanza con i genitori, i ragazzi non hanno a disposizione uno strumento pensato a loro uso e consumo. Noi offriamo loro una mappa giocosa, facile da tenere nello zainetto o da mettere in tasca e su cui si può anche disegnare, poi basta lavarla per farla tornare come nuova. Ogni mappa reca l’indicazione di ben quaranta «imperdibili», ossia luoghi di interesse a misura di bambino.

A differenza delle mappe per adulti le Junior sono completamente illustrate. Per tale compito ci siamo affidati ad un giova- ne italiano che vive a Berlino, Alessandro Maffioletti, che si è fatto carico del difficile compito di tradurre il linguaggio standardizzato e formale delle mappe in disegni che parlassero ai ragazzi. Ciascuna cartina - per il momento ne abbiamo prodotte cinque (Amsterdam, Berlino, Londra, New York e Parigi) - è poi stata stampata su un foglio di colore diverso per ogni meta. scegliendo tonalità vivaci e allegre. Le problematiche maggiori incontrate durante la realizzazione di questi prodotti sono state editoriali più che tecniche. Soprattutto ha richiesto una cura speciale l’individuazione dei luoghi d’interesse.

Si tratta infatti di una selezione di mete classiche e di altre più innovative e meno convenzionali. ll 90% del fatturato di Palomar viene dall’estero, tant’e vero che le mappe sono redatte in inglese. Il mercato italiano ha tempi di reazione più lenti rispetto a quelli stranieri: abbiamo cominciato da poco a distribuirle qui, anche in libreria ovviamente, ma principalmente si tratta di quelle per adulti. Per le Junior stiamo facendo invece un accordo con Feltrinelli. Le Crumpled City Junior sono oggetti esteticamente belli che fanno della loro «fisicità» un punto di forza in un’era in cui le mappe si sono spostate su cellulari e tablet. Non esiste nulla di più classico di una mappa, ma noi l’abbiamo proposta stampata su un materiale tecnologico con caratteristiche particolari che lo collocano indiscutibilmente nell’oggi, pur rimanendo «fisico›. ln poco meno di due anni abbiamo venduto oltre 400.000 mappe in tutto il mondo riuscendo a interpretare un bisogno di «materialità» ancora forte.

Palomar products selected for "PIONNIER"

Some design objects belonging to the Palomar Collection - Galileo’s Telescope, Crumpled City™ Maps, PinCity Wall Maps - have been selected for the Exhibition “PIONNIER”, during the last Maison&Objet Edition.

The aim of the Exhibition was to document today’s atmosphere and to invite to draw inspiration from the living world in order to enter a new age in which life goes on. From the presentation of François Bernard:

“PIONNIER is a state of mind as much as it is an art of living. A mix of practical spirit and poetic beliefs in search of scientific legitimacy, the style is developing in harmony with nature and time.It does not contrast nature with the city, old with new, innovation with old hat. The cycle of permanent renewal seems to have been overtaken by an aesthetic of reconsideration and creative reappropriation (…)The pioneers of “modern life” are developing a holistic philosophy, spending more time in order to “do better”, and prefer semi-mechanical, the semi- manual to the fully automatized.”

Yes, we agree and this is the philosophy which inspires Palomar design collection.
